A couple sits in a field on their Kentucky farm. It’s a summer night like countless others they’ve spent together, only tonight there is a lunar eclipse. As the astronomical wonder unfolds in seven stages, they talk about their children, their pasts, and the limited time that remains. It only takes one night to see how great a mystery the person we think we know best can be. Reed Birney and Lisa Emery star as the couple in this new play by the Pulitzer Prize–winning Donald Margulies. Inspired by Margulies’s relationship with his father-in-law, a farmer in Kentucky, Lunar Eclipse is a meditation on memory, legacy, and the meaning of life. Kate Whoriskey directs. —Jeanne Malle
